For more info, please see our "How to Fest" page.As a young girl, Krystyn Lambert was convinced that she came from another planet. Her love of magic marked her as an “oddball” at school and she often felt isolated from her peers. But as this quirky documentary reveals, Krystyn is not alone in her passion for optical illusions. In fact, she is part of an international community of innovative young magicians who are working tirelessly to perfect their acts in the hopes of becoming masters of their craft.
Engaging and spirited, MAKE BELIEVE follows six talented magicians as they prepare to compete for the title of Teen World Champion at the World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas. This year’s competitors include Derek, a 14 year-old introvert who never leaves home without a deck of cards in his pocket; Hiroki, a Japanese native whose self-taught “split fans” and nature-inspired illusions develop out of daily nine-hour sessions in a secluded home studio; Siphewe and Nkumbuzo of South Africa, whose lively performance style adds a bit of humor to the mix; and “Magic Bill,” a 19 year-old veteran who gives up a college scholarship for the opportunity to bring home the gold. Through moving portraits of these rising young stars, director J. Clay Tweel offers an inspired glimpse into a fascinating subculture, where discipline and creativity combine to produce dazzling effects.
